Quick reference
The WISEcode Standard relies on a number of acronyms drawn from food science, regulatory bodies, and WISEcode's own methodology. Here's what each one means and where it shows up.
WISEcode-specific
- Wc-UPF — WISEcode Ultra-Processed Food Standard. The specific scoring system defined by this Standard.
- SUPF — Super-Ultra-Processed Food. The top processing tier (Score > 15, or any UIC present).
- UPF — Ultra-Processed Food. The general category the Standard is designed to define more precisely.
- UIC — Unique Ingredients of Concern. Level 4 ingredients listed in Schedule 1 of the Standard.
- SAB — Scientific Advisory Board. The 25-member body that reviews the Standard annually (Section 9).
Regulatory and scientific bodies
- FDA — U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
- USDA — U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- HHS — U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
- ISO — International Organization for Standardization.
- DSHEA — Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
Food-science and labeling
- GRAS — Generally Recognized As Safe.
- DV — Daily Value.
- EDTA — Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (a chelating preservative).
- NOVA — A Brazilian food classification system developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo that categorizes foods according to their ingredient list.
- OTC — Over-the-Counter (referring to non-prescription drugs).
- QA — Quality Assurance.
Product identification
- GTIN — Global Trade Item Number.
- UPC — Universal Product Code.
