The calculation basis
The Standard defines energy from added sugar using per-serving figures: calories from added sugars per serving divided by total calories per serving. It is a proportion, not an absolute amount.
Why a proportion rather than grams
Using a ratio keeps the measure comparable across very different products. A large serving of a lightly sweetened food and a small serving of a heavily sweetened one can carry similar gram counts while representing very different formulations. The proportion captures how much of the food's energy is sugar, which is the metabolic question the penalty is designed to reflect.
What this means in practice
- Changing the declared serving size alone does not change the penalty, because both the numerator and the denominator scale together.
- Inconsistent panel data does change it. If declared calories per serving do not match the declared serving size and sugar grams, the computed ratio will be wrong.
- Multi-serving packages are assessed on the declared serving, not the container.
Common source of confusion
Two products with identical grams of added sugar per serving can receive different penalties if their total calories per serving differ. The more calorie-dense product will show a lower proportion of energy from sugar.
Before you submit
Check that serving size, total calories and added sugars are internally consistent on the panel. That single check resolves most disputed sugar penalties.
