Why validation matters
A high-resolution score is only useful if it tracks something real. Section 1.3 records the two tests used to demonstrate that the Wc-UPF scale carries information a four-category system does not.
Test one: pulling apart NOVA 4
In commercial datasets, 99 percent of fortified cereals and 99 percent of snack bars classify as NOVA 4, which leaves a manufacturer no signal to act on. The Wc-UPF scale distributes those same products across all five bands, from Minimal through Super-Ultra, which is what makes reformulation targets possible.
Test two: caloric density
Average calories per serving rise steadily across the bands, which is the pattern you would expect if the score is capturing formulation architecture rather than noise.

How to read this
The gradient is an average across large datasets, not a prediction for any single product. A Minimal product can be calorie-dense and a Super-Ultra product can be low in calories. The finding supports the scale as a whole rather than any individual score.
What validation does not claim
These are descriptive correlations with nutritional markers. They are not clinical outcomes, and a favourable score does not establish nutritional adequacy.
