Understanding the Portfolio GRAS Report

The Portfolio GRAS Report is the rollup view of GRAS classification across your entire claimed catalog. While the Product GRAS Report tells you about one product, the Portfolio GRAS Report tells you which ingredients are flagged across the whole portfolio — and where the highest-leverage cleanups are.

What the report shows

For your full claimed portfolio, the Portfolio GRAS Report displays:

• Overall portfolio status — what share of your catalog contains any Unsafe or Unclear ingredients
• Status distribution — how many products are fully GRAS, how many have Unclear flags, how many have Unsafe flags
• Ingredient leverage list — every flagged ingredient ranked by how many of your products it appears in
• Product summary — a list of all claimed products with their individual GRAS statuses, sortable and filterable
• Trend over time — how the portfolio's GRAS profile has shifted as you reformulate, claim more, or update data

The ingredient leverage list (the most actionable section)

This is the section to focus on first. The leverage list ranks flagged ingredients by the number of products each one touches.

A flagged ingredient appearing in 20 of your products is far higher leverage to fix than 20 different ingredients each appearing once. Reformulating away from a single high-leverage ingredient can clean up a meaningful share of the portfolio in one pass.

The leverage list shows, per ingredient:

• Its GRAS status (Unclear or Unsafe)
• Why it's flagged (plain-language explanation)
• How many products contain it
• Which products (with quick links into the Product GRAS Report for each)

How to read the report

1. Start with the headline distribution. What share of your portfolio is fully GRAS vs has any flags?
2. Open the leverage list. Sort by products-touched to find your highest-leverage cleanups
3. For top-leverage ingredients, decide the response. Reformulate? Verify with supplier? Watch?
4. Drill into specific products. Use the Product summary to dig into any individual product's Product GRAS Report
5. Track over time. Re-run the report after a reformulation to validate that the cleanup actually moved the portfolio number

What to do with the report

Strategic cleanup:

• Identify the 1–3 ingredients with the highest leverage and plan reformulation around them
• A single ingredient swap that touches 30% of your catalog can meaningfully shift your portfolio's GRAS profile, WISEscore Ingredient Quality pillar, and Non-UPF Shield Verification eligibility all at once

Retailer and partner prep:

• A portfolio with a clean GRAS report is a strong asset in retailer conversations, especially with chains that maintain banned-ingredient or restricted-ingredient lists
• Export the report as a PDF and share as part of your category review materials

Regulatory and internal review:

• For brands subject to regulatory review or due diligence, the Portfolio GRAS Report is defensible documentation of your current safety posture
• For internal review (board, leadership, R&D), the report quantifies what's been historically a qualitative conversation

Common questions

Are Unclear flags counted the same as Unsafe in the portfolio status? No. The report separates them. A portfolio can have 0% Unsafe flags but still have Unclear flags — and the action you take depends on which.

Why does my Portfolio GRAS Report change when I haven't reformulated anything? WISEcode's safety classifications update over time as research and regulatory positions shift. An ingredient can move between GRAS, Unclear, and Unsafe as the field evolves. The report reflects current classification.

Can I filter the leverage list by product category? Yes. Use the category filter to look at GRAS performance within a specific category (snacks, beverages, etc.) — useful for brands with portfolios that span multiple aisles.

Does the report include discovered products? Portfolio-level rollups include claimed products only. To get GRAS coverage on discovered products, claim them first.

How fast does the report refresh after a reformulation? Immediately. As soon as the ingredient list update is confirmed in the data ingestion chat, the Portfolio GRAS Report reflects the new classification.
