WISEcode AI checks GS1 prefix authority at the moment you publish, not just when your organization registered. A product can only be published if its UPC falls under a GS1 prefix granted to your organization. This prevents anyone from accidentally publishing products they do not own. This article explains what the check does and what to do when it blocks a product that is clearly yours.
How the check works
When you publish, WISEcode compares the product’s UPC against the GS1 prefixes granted to your organization. If they match, the publish goes through. If they do not, the product cannot be published from your organization — even if the brand name on the product matches yours. The product stays in your Portfolio and still counts in your own analysis; it just does not go live.
Affected products show up under the GS1 prefix chip in the Portfolio’s “What’s missing” filters and in the Link a GS1 prefix Fix Group.
Why a product of yours might not match
The most common reason is that the prefix on the UPC is held by a different legal entity — a parent company, a sister company, a co-manufacturer, or a distributor that registered the barcodes. Other causes: the product was entered with a mistyped UPC, or your organization registered with one prefix while some of your products use another.
Two ways forward
- Request another GS1 license grant from your organization profile. If you have authority to publish under the additional prefix, add it directly from your organization profile. The request goes to WISEcode’s GS1 License Review queue.
- Ask WISEcode support. If the prefix belongs to a related entity, submit a request with the UPCs affected, your organization name as registered in WISEcode, the entity that holds the prefix, and any evidence of your right to publish (GS1 certificate, packaging showing your brand, or a distributor or co-manufacturing agreement). Support reviews the case and can grant publishing authority for that prefix once the relationship is confirmed.
Either path routes through WISEcode’s internal GS1 License Review. While it is pending, the products stay in your Portfolio for analysis and you can keep working on them.
What not to do
Do not re-enter the product under a different UPC. Duplicate UPCs are rejected, and a changed UPC will not match your retail listings or the barcode shoppers scan.
After the grant is approved
Products under the newly granted prefix leave the GS1 prefix filter automatically. If nothing else is missing, they move to Ready to publish and you can publish them individually, from the Fix Group, or by asking chat.
Common questions
The product shows my brand name. Why is the prefix someone else’s? Brand names and GS1 prefixes are registered separately. Many brands sell under prefixes licensed to a parent or a co-packer.
Can I publish under my distributor’s prefix? Only if your organization is granted that prefix. Mention the distributor relationship in your request so the review can confirm it.
I disputed a UPC under the old WISEcode Intelligence process. Is that still valid? Ownership decisions carry over. If a product that was reassigned to you is still blocked, submit a request with the UPC and a member of the WISEcode team will review it.
