A kickback is a request from the WISEcode Science Team to break a multi-component ingredient into its underlying components before analysis can finish. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it in a few minutes through chat.
What is a kickback?
WISEcode analyzes products at the ingredient level. A composite label such as the ones below stands in for several underlying ingredients and cannot be matched as one entry:
- Vegan Fish Sauce — water, soy sauce, seaweed extract, salt, sugar
- Pickle Brine — vinegar, salt, spices, water
- Bread Crumbs — flour, yeast, salt, oil, sugar
- Chicken Broth (in some cases) — water, chicken, salt, flavorings
These are not wrong to list on your packaging — they are everyday food language. But a composite label hides what is actually in your product.
Why it matters
FDA regulation
Under FDA 21 CFR 101.4(b)(2), multi-component ingredients on packaged food must be declared with their underlying components — either as a parenthetical list after the composite name or dispersed into the main ingredient list in order of predominance. Sub-components present at negligible levels with no functional effect may be exempt under 21 CFR 101.100(a)(3), for example a small amount of carrier oil in a natural flavor.
What it means in WISEcode AI
A product with an unresolved composite ingredient stays in Needs work under the Ingredient check blocker. It cannot be published until the ingredient is broken down, and it is not eligible for NON-UPF verification.
How to fix it
- Open the product in chat. Use the link in the kickback email, click the product’s Steps link in Portfolio, or ask chat to pull up the product by UPC. The flagged ingredient and the reviewer’s note are shown.
-
Give chat the updated ingredient list. Two formats are acceptable under the FDA rule — pick the one that matches your actual on-pack label:
Option A · Parenthetical listing
Before: water, sugar, vegan fish sauce, seaweed
After: water, sugar, vegan fish sauce (water, soy sauce, seaweed extract, sea salt, sugar), seaweedOption B · Dispersed into the main list
Before: water, sugar, vegan fish sauce, seaweed
After: water, soy sauce, sugar, seaweed extract, sea salt, seaweed - Confirm the matches. Chat re-verifies the new components inline. Pick from the short list if any match is ambiguous.
- Publish the edits. If the product was already live, choose Publish edits to push the corrected version to shoppers, or Keep saved only to publish later.
If the same composite ingredient appears in several of your products, fix it once from the Confirm ingredient matches Fix Group and the breakdown propagates to all of them.
What happens after you fix it
If every ingredient now resolves and nothing else is missing, the product moves to Ready to publish (or stays Published with the edits pending). If the updated list contains an ingredient WISEcode has not seen before, it goes to the Science Team; the row shows “With WISEcode, about a day” until it is resolved.
Common questions
Do I have to change my packaging? Not necessarily. WISEcode needs the underlying components in your ingredient list on the platform. Whether your on-pack label needs to change is a separate FDA compliance question for your regulatory advisor; WISEcode does not issue FDA compliance guidance.
What if the composite is a proprietary formulation? You still need to declare the underlying components under 21 CFR 101.4(b)(2). A proprietary flavor or spice blend present at a negligible level with no functional effect may be exempt under 21 CFR 101.100(a)(3) — but “negligible” has a specific regulatory meaning. If in doubt, disclose.
Can I dispute a kickback? Yes. Reply to the kickback email with your reasoning and any supporting documentation, and the Science Team will review and get back to you.
