Adding Products to Your Portfolio – WISEcode

Most of your catalog arrives in your Portfolio automatically: when your organization is created, WISEcode runs Forager to find your products on the web and match them to the WISEcode catalog under your GS1 prefix. Products land in your private workspace pre-matched and pre-scored, with variants grouped and duplicates caught. This article covers what to do when something is missing — a new launch, a private-label item, a regional SKU — or when your portfolio starts empty.

Two ways to add products

Chat — best for one product at a time or quick edits. Chat walks you through the whole flow, verifies ingredients as you go, tells you what is still missing, and takes the product all the way to Publish in one conversation.
Bulk CSV upload — best for a full catalog. Click + Add at the top of the Portfolio page and choose Catalog. See Bulk Product Upload: How the CSV Template Works for the template.

Use whichever fits the job. Both paths land the product in your private workspace, where it joins your analysis as soon as it has a name and an ingredient list. Nothing reaches shoppers until you publish.

What you will need per product

UPC — the exact code. Every UPC is a distinct product, so each package size needs its own entry. The UPC must fall under a GS1 prefix granted to your organization for the product to be publishable.
Product name as it appears on the front of pack
Ingredient list copied verbatim from the label, including parentheses, commas and asterisks
Nutrition Facts panel — serving size, servings per container, calories and every nutrient listed

Recommended but not required: front-of-pack imagery (how your product appears to shoppers in the WISEcode app), allergen statements, and on-pack claims. Images are not needed to publish.

Adding a product through chat

Open chat from Portfolio (or from any page — chat is everywhere) and say what you want: “Add a new product: UPC 012345678905, [name], ingredients: [paste], nutrition: [paste].” You can paste text, type values, or attach a photo of the label or a spec sheet PDF.
Chat asks for anything it still needs — name, UPC, pack format, ingredients, nutrition panel — one piece at a time.
As the ingredient list comes in, chat verifies each ingredient against the WISEcode catalog in the same conversation. If a match is ambiguous, it shows a short list and you pick the right one. There is no separate verification step.
Chat shows what is still missing (a UPC, Nutrition Facts, a GS1 prefix mismatch) so you always know what stands between the product and Publish.
When the product is complete, chat prompts you to publish. Confirm, and it goes live in the WISEcode app. Or keep it saved in your workspace and publish later.

Adding many products with a CSV

Click + Add at the top of Portfolio and choose Catalog.
Download the CSV template and fill in one row per product (up to 500 per file). Each UPC gets its own row, even when formulations are identical across sizes.
Upload the file. Complete rows are added to your workspace; rows with gaps land in Needs work with the specific missing field shown in the “What’s missing” filters.
Work through the Confirm ingredient matches Fix Group to settle any ingredient checks in bulk. Settling an ingredient once propagates to every product that uses it.
Publish what is ready from the Publish what’s ready Fix Group, or ask chat to publish them.

Multipacks and variety packs

Multipacks, cases and club packs of a single product are supported — point the pack at its base unit and it inherits ingredients and nutrition. Variety packs (different products under one UPC) are not available in the Beta; add each flavor as its own product for now. See What’s not yet available in the WISEcode AI Beta.

Nutrition Facts exemptions

Some categories are exempt from a full Nutrition Facts panel under FDA 21 CFR 101.9(j) — plain coffee and tea, single-ingredient spices, flavor extracts, food colors. For those, tell chat the product is NFP-exempt (or set the NFP Exception column to Y in the CSV). The ingredient list is still required. WISEcode does not verify exemption eligibility — that determination is yours.

What happens after you add a product

It appears in your Portfolio in the state its data supports: Needs work if anything is missing, Ready to publish if not.
Once it has a name and ingredients, it is in your dashboards and chat answers — there is no claim step.
After you publish, shoppers can see it in the WISEcode app.
If a published product scores NON-UPF, it shows as Ready to verify in the verification lens and you can start Shield verification from Portfolio or from chat.

Common questions

How do I know if a product is missing? Compare your Portfolio count to your catalog, or ask chat: “Which of my products are not in my portfolio?” and give it a list of UPCs.

Can WISEcode find missing products automatically over time? Forager runs when a new organization is created. For existing organizations it does not re-run against your workspace, so you will not get unexpected additions. Adding manually is always the fastest path.

What if a product WISEcode found is not mine? Reject it. Rejected products stay rejected and will not be added back on future runs.

What if I do not have complete data for every product? Add what you have. Products save with incomplete data as Needs work and still count in your analysis once they have a name and ingredients. Finish them later from the Fix Groups.

Why can’t I publish a product I just added? Usually its UPC is not under a GS1 prefix granted to your organization. See Why can’t I publish these products?
